Secrets of lasting paint job of tired kitchen cabinets.
Painting existing kitchen cabinets is the easiest way (and most budget friendly – if done by yourself) for a total kitchen transformation. Following are steps ensuring your success:
- Clean them thoroughly. Build-up on the kitchen cabinets is usually combination of the grease from cooking and dust, if not removed frequently it can create significant layer ruining any paint job. Best choice for a cleaner is a commercial product designed to be used on wooden cabinets. Our recommendation is to use citrus based cleaners. Always read and follow manufacturer instructions before use of any heavy duty cleaning product. Cleaning procedure will typically require rinsing and drying of the cabinets, again follow manufacturer’s recommendations for the best results.
- Sanding. Sand the cabinets as smooth as possible or as acceptable to you. You ultimately set the quality standards. Using electrical tools makes the project easer, but be careful not to over sand spots and make surfaces uneven. Always wear protective glasses and mask when sanding using electric tools. Remember all surfaces need to be sanded not only the easy ones. After done with sanding remove all sanding dust.
- Prime. Next apply oil based primer and let it fully dry. It is important to use oil based primer not latex based.
- Repeat sanding and priming. Sand again with fine-grade sandpaper, remove all dust, and apply one more coat of primer. If you are not fully satisfied with smoothness or over sanded some spots repeat the cycle of sanding, dusting and priming again.
- Painting. Apply to coats of 100% Acrylic paint. All paints that state 100% Acrylic are of very high quality and will likely cost considerably more now, but will save a lot of money and labor in the future.
